Dora still missing after one week

Thursday 20 January 2022

A nervous dog who went missing near Amherst School on Thursday last week has still not been rescued despite numerous sightings of her.

Much like the cartoon character of the same name, Dora has been exploring far and wide with sightings of her across St. Peter Port, St. Andrew's and the Castel.

The medium-sized grey cross breed was wearing a blue vest (pictured above) when she escaped her owner last week. Recent sightings suggest she has lost that vest.

The GSPCA said sightings towards the end of last week placed Dora near Amherst School, Fosse Andre, the Grammar School and St. Pierre Park Hotel. Over the weekend, she was seen at Donkey Hill, near the GSPCA's animal shelter and at Talbot Valley. This week, she has been seen in Footes Lane and near St. Pierre Park Hotel again.

GSPCA staff and volunteers are regularly going to the locations where she has been seen to try to locate her and reunite her with her owner.

Steve Byrne, GSPCA Manager, said the search is focused around the Castel/St. Andrew's borders.

“We are appealing for sightings of a missing dog called Dora that originally went missing near Amherst School. We believe she may be in the Castel or St. Andrew's area with sightings from Talbot Valley to the Grammar School and St. Pierre Park Hotel," said Mr Byrne.

He advised members of the public against approaching the dog as she is known to be very timid and may be increasingly wary of people after a week away from home. She is understood to be a rescue dog who was recently rehomed and her owner is keen to find her and take her back home.

“We believe the grey and blue medical jumper she had on has come off," said Mr Byrne. "We really don’t want people chasing her as she is very timid and it will scare her from the area. Instead...call us immediately on 257261.

“If you do see her after the call, please do try and get some pictures or VT’s at a safe distance so we can confirm it is her and the condition she is in.”

As Dora is known to be a timid pet, the animal welfare charity is working with her owner on a schedule to ensure the search efforts do not scare her into hiding for longer.

“We are in close communication with the owner and doing all we can to help, including at looking at options [such as] wildlife cameras and a dog trap, but there is a process to ensure this sort of operation works and does not further scare her to another area. Any sightings, please call us immediately and we can then work with the owner to get Dora safely home.”

The GSPCA offers advice for finding lost pets and information for when pets or wild animals or birds are discovered and need help.

That advice is available at gspca.org.gg
