Dog owners beware

Thursday 02 April 2020

Anyone walking their dogs at Pembroke needs to watch out for a dangerous waxy substance that has washed up there.

States Works was made aware yesterday and crew members were going to clear it away as soon as possible but there is a chance more might wash up.

Agriculture, Countryside and Land Management Services said it's not yet been confirmed what it is, but staff would "strongly advise dog owners to keep their pets away from any such substances".

There have previously been reports of a white substance washing up on Bailiwick beaches, including in 2013 and 2014 when degraded oil or fat was found. That is decomposed, rancid (oxidation and/or hydrolysis) lumps of palm oil.

If ingested by dogs it can cause extreme gastrointestinal upsets resulting in vomiting and diarrhoea with associated dehydration. In the worst cases it can cause pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) which is often associated with abdominal pain.

If any substances are found to be washed up on beaches, members of the public are advised not to remove the substance but to report it to ACLMS by emailing aclms@gov.gg.

If you have already picked up the substance, please double wrap it in plastic and dispose of it in your normal refuse.
