Dementia friendly Guernsey plans continue

Tuesday 16 May 2023

A dementia friendly lesson - open to everyone - is being held at the library on Wednesday as part of the ongoing events for Dementia Action Week.

The national campaign to raise awareness of the condition and to support people living with dementia, and their carers, launched in Guernsey with a social afternoon on Monday, followed by a golf day on Tuesday.

To widen understanding of the condition, Dementia Friendly Guernsey is hosting an open session at the Guille Alles Library from 10:00 tomorrow. It's billed as an "interactive session to learn more about dementia and learn five simple actions we can all take to improve life for people living with dementia".

Alzheimer charities - like Dementia Friendly Guernsey - work with individuals and organisations throughout the year, to encourage people to act on dementia. This year's theme for Dementia Action Week is dementia diagnosis. The open session at the library will help people understand a dementia diagnosis as well as help improve the lives of those affected directly or indirectly.

The library is also hosting an information and resources display all week, with tailored dementia awareness sessions also being run at the Grammar and Les Voies schools and in some businesses including RBSI and Catholic National Mutual.

Julie Bulpitt is the Co-ordinator for Dementia Friendly Guernsey. She said a lot of people are working together this week to aid understanding.

In Guernsey, we are delighted that so many of the organisations, charities and professionals who make up Dementia Friendly Guernsey come together to provide such a wide range of activities during Dementia Action Week, to help us shine a light on all aspects of dementia and the simple steps we can all take to help those living with the condition and their loved ones.”

The open session at the library will be followed by an activity group for those living with dementia and their carers in the afternoon, and a carers' social afternoon.

People living with dementia have the opportunity to go sailing during the morning in a new activity being offered during the summer months by the Guernsey Alzheimers Association.

Events continue on Thursday with the Guernsey Alzheimers Association's monthly lunch and a pop up cafe for those living with dementia, their family members and carers.

On Friday, there'll be a 'singing for the brain' group activity at St Martin’s Community Centre while John Randall will narrate a trip down memory lane in a tour around St Peter Port on Le Petit Train during the afternoon.
