Could you look after a child a few hours a week?

Monday 02 September 2024

The States need five Short Break Carers to help disabled children and their families.

Taking on the role would mean providing a child with precious one-on-one time with a carer, something which can be hard to find with other children in the household, or when parents are working.

Within the Bailiwick there are children with varying needs who need this extra support, with learning disabilities, sensory impairments, autism or conditions that may involve a number of different physical impairments and learning difficulties.

The support given is flexible, ranging from the young person being taken out for a few hours or being looked after by a carer in their own home, as well as regular overnight stays with carers.

Successful applicants will receive carers allowance of £13.39 per hour which is non-tax deductible and will be provided alongside any specialist training required.

Anyone interested in the role should get in touch with the Family Placement service, with social worker Vicki Tennant saying the role provides so much good.

"This rewarding role can make all the difference to a family, allowing parents of children with disabilities to do some of the things which most of us take for granted, such as getting to the shops, giving their other children some attention or just catching up on some rest. The child also benefits from a change of carer who will give them some stimulation, change in environment and new experiences to broaden their world," she said.

Testimonials

“The only comment I can make regarding Naomi’s short break care is that she is invaluable and I don’t know what I’d do without her.”

“Normally my half term weeks are stressful and exhausting and I count the days until school begins again but since having Amy on board I have been able to cope much better on a daily basis.”

“Over the last year Laura has been incredibly reliable and flexible and we all appreciate what she does by giving us time to spend with Ben while knowing that Jamie is safe and having fun. Most importantly, Jamie loves her.”
