“Concerning move from the States of Alderney”

Wednesday 06 March 2024

A reduction in States and People’s Meetings in Alderney has been called a “backwards step for open debate” by a longstanding politician.

Alex Snowdon took to Twitter to decry a recent decision to reduce the number of States meetings.

The States of Alderney released its full list of meetings for 2024 on 5 March, with seven full meetings lined up with corresponding People’s Meetings.

In a press release the States of Alderney said: “There are fewer meetings this year in order to enable better alignment with Policy & Finance Committee schedules.”

“Future meetings are scheduled for May 15th, July 10th, September 18th, October 16th and December 18th.

The next meeting will be held on 13 March and Express will be heading over to report on the debate.

In response to the States meeting announcement, Alex Snowdon said:

“This is a really concerning move from the States of Alderney. Less States meetings, less People’s Meetings, meaning less openness and transparency.

“A backwards step for open debate and watering down States of Alderney. Disappointing actions. This will increase more debate behind closed doors.”
