The Guernsey Commonwealth Games Association has been working hard to ensure that the 2022 team is as good as it can be, in spite of the effects of the global pandemic.
The corona virus pandemic has ripped through the international athletics calendar, both due to an inability to travel and the cancellation of competitive events across almost every sport.
The GCGA Council has adjusted its selection process with the addition of an Athlete Nomination Policy, which has been developed over recent months. This policy hopes to simplify procedures and take into account the problems that have occurred due to the pandemic.
First and foremost, the policy seeks a ‘high standard’ of athlete for team consideration. If there are open places left on a team, the Council may consider nominations for a variety of reasons, one of the most important of which is an athlete’s development.
“We have seen athlete progression from attendance at all of the five Commonwealth Youth Games from 2004 to 2019, with performances at Senior Commonwealth Games that justify their team inclusion,” explained a GCGA spokesperson.

“Results at the last three Games have seen athletes from several sports achieve a top 10 finishing place, with many achieving a top 50% position results in their respective event.
“Our Guernsey athletes are great ambassadors for our island, showing their commitment to their sport and to the Commonwealth Games movement.”
The Association has also announced a 50th anniversary celebration evening, which will take place in early December at the Farmhouse with invited guests, sponsors, and former Commonwealth athletes. The Association's new logo, developed as part of a wider rebrand, will be revealed on the evening.
