The Guernsey Sports Commission says it will build on the success of the first three years of Active 8 if deputies back fresh funding.
Education, Sport & Culture will attempt to get £300,000 a year allocated to the strategy, which will fund some of the work of both the GSC and the Health Improvement Commission.
Policy & Resources is against allocating more money and instead wants a review carried out.
Projects begun under the guise of Active 8 include a scheme to ensure all sports clubs are up to standard on issues of governance and safeguarding, and the distribution of sports vouchers to help pay for equipment or fees for families who would otherwise not be able to afford them.
“The Guernsey Sports Commission is of course delighted to hear that the Committee for Education Sport & Culture will be leading an amendment seeking increased funding for the Active 8 Sports Strategy,” said the commission’s operations director Graham Chester.
“The Commission hopes it will attract widespread support from deputies allowing us to build on the success of the first three years of the Active 8 strategy.
“There is a wealth of evidence showing the impact that participating in sport has on a community’s physical and mental health and we agree with the ESC President, Deputy Dudley-Owen, that this small amount of additional funding will deliver a good return on investment.
“The Commission is looking forward to working with the Committee on the details of how they anticipate allocating this funding, should the Assembly agree to support the amendment.
“The Commission will also continue to rely on the private funding we receive in support of a range of our work across the community.”
P&R has argued that the funding is well in excess of what the previous Assembly voted on when it unanimously approved the strategy and said money should be made available for the next 10 years.
In the Government Work Plan policy letter, it said that the revised request of £300,000 a year was £2.1m. over the seven year period, an increase of £1.48m. compared to the plan considered by the last States.
