Cobo sea wall works start today

The latest emergency work to shore up the sea wall at Cobo starts today with further road diversions in place.

This work to fix a 5m stretch of the wall is north of the current work outside the Rockmount which is also continuing this week.

The damage was found during a routine inspection of the seawall following the recent Spring tides. An area was found in "need of urgent repair".

The engineers who inspected the wall said it is not due to the same issue that caused the problems outside the Rockmount, but this work itself will take around three weeks to complete.

A spokesperson for Agriculture, Countryside & Land Management Services apologised for any inconvenience caused to residents and the public during the essential works"

"This is an area of high importance and a repair will be undertaken along a 5m stretch of wall where joints in the coping stones (the stones forming the top of the wall) have failed, allowing the stones to move. Scaffolding will be erected on the seaward side of the wall and repointing will take place on joints on the road, seaward and top faces of the wall.

"Work on site will commence on 25th May and a one-way traffic system will be in place for the duration of the works, which are anticipated to take around 3 weeks. The one-way system on the Cobo coast road will remain in place for this period."

The workers carrying out the repairs will be adhering to social distancing where possible and efforts will be made to reduce movements of vehicles and personnel as far as is possible.

ACLMS said Investing in coastal defence continues to be a priority and large scale repointing of the wall will take place from the slipway at the filter with Route de Carteret to the slipway at the Cobo Bay Kiosk later this year.
