Getting children to engage with the environment

Saturday 24 October 2020

The Clean Earth Trust is hosting a number of environmental events for families over half term, with games, litter picking, crafting and a treasure hunt.

The activities will kick off tomorrow, Sunday, with the Big Herm Beach Clean.

In partnership with Herm Island, Travel Trident and the Biodiversity Partnership, the CET team will lead a litter pick, games and a hunt around the island's coastline.

All participants will be given a beach cleaning kit, and will be offered reduced boat fares; £5 for adults and £2.50 for children. The boat will leave at 10:30 and return at 14:35.

Due to limited spaces, those planning on heading to Herm are asked to pre-register via Eventbrite.

"As the weather changes, the ocean's seasonal vitality will be churning up all sorts of debris which will find its way onto our shores," explained Helen Quin from the Trust. "We thought it would be timely to head over to Herm and help remove it from the environment."

CET has also teamed up with the Guille-Alles Library to deliver two Little Library Litter Picking Mornings. They'll incorporate educational activities with a womble round Town, crafting and stories - all oriented around the environment.

The free events are aimed at children aged five to seven, and eight to ten. They'll take place on Tuesday and Thursday respectively during the half term week.

"We've put together some interactive activities for our younger community to engage with the environment and explain the importance of keeping it clean," Ms Quin continued.

"We also want to highlight our litter picking lending scheme that's available at the library, where families, groups and individuals can take out litter pickers, just like they would a book, and do their own beach cleans."
