The 2017 Channel Islands Sports Personality of the Year awards will be handed out at the end of January, during a ceremony at Beau Sejour in Guernsey.

The event, sponsored by Betway, will include an appearance from British Paralympian Richard Whitehead, who is a gold medalist as well as the world record holder for athletes with a double amputation in the marathon and half marathon events.

Mr Whitehead will take part in a question and answer session during the awards ceremony at Beau Sejour on Thursday 25 January. He is also expected to take part in a PE session with local school children earlier in the day.

During the gala evening, which will be attended by sports people from across the Channel Islands, the Betway Sports Personality of the Year 2017 will be among the awards announced.

Betway’s Anthony Werkman said: “It has once again been a fantastic year of sport for the islands, the nominations demonstrate the outstanding achievement by Channel Islands sports men and women throughout 2017. We are looking forward to an exciting evening of celebration and congratulate all those who have been shortlisted.” 

Four people have been nominated for the award with two coming from Guernsey and two from Jersey. They were selected to form a shortlist from a number of nominations made by the public. The public will now vote for the winner out of Guernsey Athlete Cameron Chalmers, Guernsey Boxer Billy Le Poullain, Jersey Archer Lucy O’Sullivan and Jersey BMX Rider Alex Coleborn.

Other awards to be handed out on the night include the Waves Team of the Year 2017 with Guernsey Raiders Ladies, Jersey Cricket, Jersey Reds, Victoria College Prep Football and Jersey Rowing Club all shortlisted.

The Rising Star of the Year Award, sponsored by PraxisIFM will go to either Guernsey motor racing driver Sebastian Priaulx, Guernsey athlete Alastair Chalmers, Jersey motorsport's Ed Fossey or Jersey shooter Cameron Pirouet. 

The Source Recruitment Coach of the Year shortlist includes Guernsey Ladies Rugby coach Chris Grittiths, Guernsey's Rovers Football Coach Jez Robin and Guernsey Boxing Coach Ben Duff as well as Jersey Gymnastics Yana Vibert.

The Michael Lucas Sporting Hero Award and the Judges Award for Achievement will also be handed out on the night.
