Christmas brings some rubbish changes

Sunday 23 December 2018

Some recycling and rubbish collections arrangements will change over the Christmas and New Year period.

All of the changes are listed online, with an 'address look up facility' so each householder can check exactly how they might be affected.

Guernsey's Recycling officer Tina Norman-Ross said; “obviously we hope islanders will reduce, reuse and recycle as much as they can over the festive period. To help them we will be providing lots of useful information through social media and through normal advertising channels.

“But the easiest way to find out about what materials to put out for collection, on what nights, is to visit gov.gg/mybinnight. That is up to date with the arrangements over the holidays and throughout the year."

For householders there are some changes to the doorstep collections, as below. Otherwise the bring banks will be open as usual, with extra collections arranged to empty them when necessary. The staff will only be off on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, to ensure the bring banks have as much room as possible for everyone's festive waste.

Mrs Norman-Ross hopes people will continue to be vigilant with their recycling efforts over Christmas, after a positive start to the new waste strategy.

“We are really proud of Islanders’ recycling efforts. We now pick up around 120 tonnes of materials for recycling every week. That is the equivalent to the weight of an adult blue whale – the largest animal on the planet.

“The guys who service these sites (the bring banks) are having a two day break over Christmas so we would ask people just to be patient. If you find the bins are full, please don’t leave stuff on the ground, because that really does cause problems. Please, hold onto it for another day.

All bring bank materials or kerbside bags can also be taken to the Longue Hougue Recycling Centre. So if anyone can’t keep hold of items until their next collection they can drop them off there. It will be closed for the Bank Holidays but next week we are opening for an extra day on Thursday, when the site is normally shut.

“Opening times for all the waste sites over the festive period can be found at gov.gg/wasteopeningtimes.

Christmas recycling

Mrs Norman-Ross said that they are not just targeting Christmas packaging though, with the reduce and reuse message as pertinent as the recycling one.

"Anyone who is making space for all the wonderful gifts they hope to receive and needs to clear old, unwanted items should think about a trip to Longue Hougue. A lot of items can be dropped off there for recycling, or if suitable may be given a new lease of life through our charity partners GO."

The Longue Hougue Recycling Centre is closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day but will be open for business as usual on the other days in between, and on Thursday 27 December from 08:00 until 16:00.
