“Children at centre” of inclusive La Houguette Primary School

La Houguette Primary School has received a very positive report from Ofsted, with inspectors noting that leaders at the school have high expectations of what pupils can achieve, while pupils themselves enjoy being at the school.

In the recent report released by Ofsted a student is even noted to have said: “I love this school. I want to live here forever and ever!”

The school was marked good in all five areas of inspection: Quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development and welfare, leadership and management, and early years provision.

“Everyone at our school is delighted to have been rated by inspectors as good in all five categories,” said Claire Judd, La Houguette Primary School Headteacher.

“It is fantastic for the whole school community as achieving that kind of consistency across the wide-ranging categories is challenging but well deserved, thanks to everyone’s hard work.

“I want to thank our staff for their continued dedication, our parents for their overwhelming support and our amazing pupils who make us very proud every day. We will continue striving to make La Houguette the best it can be.”

Inspectors said leaders in the school prioritise reading.

“From the moment children start in Reception, they start to learn phonics,” the report states. “Books match the sounds pupils are learning. Leaders’ careful tracking of pupils’ phonics knowledge means those who struggle receive additional support to catch up quickly.”

In fact, only two points were raised where the school could improve; clarity from teachers in what they want their students to learn, and more precision in assessing what pupils know and understand.

The President of the Committee for Education, Sport & Culture, Deputy Andrea Dudley-Owen, has congratulated the school community.

One of our Education Strategy’s four priorities is to deliver high quality learning and excellent outcomes, and we are committed to external inspections as we recognise they play a crucial role in both validating good practice and identifying where improvements can be made.

Striving for continual improvement is a key part of the culture throughout education, and the consistency demonstrated at La Houguette across the five inspected categories is very impressive.
