"It's been a challenging year for people living with dementia"

Sunday 16 May 2021

Community events that help to bring magic to the lives of those with dementia will be in the spotlight next week, as organisers reflect on a year that has seen people hit hard by two lockdowns.

Next week is Dementia Action Week, a national campaign by charities to focus people’s attention on the actions we can all take to improve the lives of those living with dementia, their families and loved ones.

In Guernsey, there are a range of activities shining a light on this area throughout the week, including a chance to try out the Tovertafel, a unique and interactive 'Magic Table' designed especially for people living with mid-to-late stage dementia.

On Monday, an open dementia awareness session will be held at the Guille Alles Public Library from 10:00, followed by an Afternoon Tea and Dance from 15:00 to 17:00 at Les Cotils.

Organised by Dementia Friendly Guernsey, guests who have booked a place will have an opportunity to dance and chat the afternoon away.

On Wednesday 19, there will be an opportunity to try out the 'Magic Table' from 10:00 - 12:00 at La Nouvelle Maraitaine Community Library.

Dementia Friendly Guernsey Co-ordinator Julie Bulpitt said it was more important than ever to highlight community groups that improve the lives of people with the condition.

"The past year has been especially challenging for those living with dementia and their loved ones," she said.

"We are delighted to be able to shine a spotlight on the many organisations, individuals and professionals who provide regular support and activities to highlight some of the simple steps we can all take to help those living with the condition and their loved ones."
