Can Guernsey bring the Muratti Vase home?

Saturday 12 May 2018

Guernsey's men take on Jersey in the final of the Muratti Vase this afternoon in a game that is sure to put the spotlight on inter island rivalry at Springfield in St Helier.

Jersey Police have had to put extra security measures in place, amid fears there could be a repeat of incidents two years ago when the match was last played on Jersey soil.

In 2016, the usual friendly rivalry escalated beyond "banter" and fans clashed within the Springfield ground. Whereas in previous years carrot throwing and chants being sung have been accepted as part of the Muratti atmosphere, two years ago a number of fans had to be escorted from the ground as police officers fought to bring the situation under control.

To prevent similar scenes today, arrangements have been made to segregate the home and away fans with Guernsey fans due to be enclosed in an area with its own refreshments available as well as toilet facilities.

The Hepburns Insurance Muratti is due to kick off at 15:00 with live updates via the GFA Twitter account for those who have been unable to travel to watch the match live.

Following last year's 2-1 win over Jersey at Footes Lane, Guernsey will be looking to retain the trophy with their first victory at Springfield since 2014. During that game  the Sarnians won 4-1.

First time Muratti manager Chris Tardif has made his final selection for the squad list with 16 players travelling to Jersey including himself in contention for a spot playing as goalkeeper for Guernsey again after more than a year out with injury. There are only five changes to the squad selected for the semi-final against Alderney.

The full squad for the Final is:

  • Thomas De La Mare
  • Harry Tobin
  • River Marsh
  • Craig Young
  • Charlton Gauvain
