People celebrating their 100th birthdays or special wedding anniversaries this year will receive a special delivery of cake and a personal letter from the Lieutenant-Governor, to mark the official birthday of Her Majesty The Queen.

Deliveries will take place this week in Guernsey and Alderney, in the run up to The Queen’s official birthday on Saturday 13 June 2020.

The corona virus pandemic has led to the cancellation of events usually held at Government House such as the Lieutenant-Governor’s annual reception to mark The Queen’s official birthday, along with regular tea parties for islanders in receipt of special anniversary cards from Her Majesty.

Major Marco Ciotti, Chief of Staff to the Lieutenant-Governor, said the special deliveries to those who would normally be at these events would fulfil two aims.

"His Excellency and Lady Corder still wanted to mark these significant occasions despite the present situation, while following the current Public Health guidelines," he said. "The solution was to combine the two by sharing a special cake with islanders celebrating significant anniversaries, on Her Majesty’s official birthday.

"The Queen’s birthday reception at Government House is normally attended by more than 500 guests. The decision to cancel this year’s event reflects the recent announcement from Buckingham Palace that the annual Trooping of the Colour, which dates back to 1758 and takes place on the Sovereign’s official birthday, will not go ahead in its traditional form this year."

The birthday cake that selected islanders will receive is being baked Pippa Ozard, Head Chef at Government House, who has cooked personally for Her Majesty The Queen and for most members of the Royal Family, as well as eight Lieutenant-Governors and a long list of visiting Ministers, Ambassadors and senior politicians.

"Pippa is making a chocolate biscuit cake, which we understand is a favourite in the Royal household," said Major Ciotti. "Personally, I am not surprised as it’s very good."

Islanders who nominated eligible relatives or friends to attend a Government House tea party this year will also receive a delivery of birthday cake and a letter from the Lieutenant-Governor.
