Bursary launched by Ladies' College

Thursday 22 September 2022

The Ladies' College is to offer a new bursary scheme, open to students starting in Year 7 or the Sixth Form from next September.

It is the first time the private school has offered a bursary scheme, and coincides with the College's 150th anniversary.

The headteacher said fundraising activities, planned as part of the 150 year anniversary celebrations, will focus on providing "access to the school".

The plan will be to then arrange ongoing fundraising initiatives which will be used "to offer a number of students a percentage of funds towards their fees, depending on individual needs".

Daniele Harford-Fox, Principal of The Ladies’ College said she was very pleased with this initiative.

"I am delighted that the Governors have decided that our fundraising efforts will be used for bursaries.

"Our doors have always been open to young women from a variety of backgrounds, which has contributed to the richness of our culture and the diversity of perspectives and voices. On this important anniversary for the College, it seems fitting that we do even more to open access, whilst maintaining the legacy of our pioneering founders. "

Mrs Harford-Fox said this mission to bring in bursaries is a personal ambition, reflecting her own lived experiences.

"When I was a teenager, I was given a bursary to a small girls’ school near Brighton, and it changed my life.

"The all-girls environment, with talented and committed teachers, had a profound effect on me, allowing me to become the first person in my family to get a degree. I think in our rapidly changing world, it is increasingly important to create space for more young women to develop skills and become independent, creative and dynamic young people.

"I am really committed to giving back and allowing others to have access to some of these opportunities and am thus proud to be one of the first people to sign up as a donor to our bursary fund."

Plans to mark the 150th anniversary of The Ladies College have already led to a number of ideas coming to fruition. Earlier this week, past and present students, staff and friends of the school gathered at La Vallette for a number of swimming races.

Prior to 2018, students attending The Ladies' College were able to apply for a funded place through the island's 11+ examination.

Since academic selection was removed, the three colleges no longer receive funding for scholarship pupils. Mrs Harford-Fox said this has led to the Ladies' College looking at alternative options for their future.

"One of the things that makes our school so special is the diversity and individuality of our students. We are a chocolate box of flavours, and our differences make us strong.

"With the loss of the special places scheme and the fast-changing educational landscape, it is more important than ever that we find ways to open up access to more girls and our hope is that the bursary fund will offer support to some of our island’s families."
