Politicians have approved planning applications for the revitalisation of the former Quayside site and nearby properties.

The decision, made by the Development & Planning Authority during an Open Planning Meeting, allows for the introduction of a new retail building which is set to house a Home Bargains store, as well as the conversion, extension, and alteration of existing properties to create six flats.

One public representative, along with applicants' representatives, participated in the meeting.

Deputy Victoria Oliver, President of the Development & Planning Authority, said: "We're really pleased to see appropriate development come forward on a currently underutilised site within one of our Main Centres which has been derelict since 2014, making a positive contribution to the area, bringing investment and creating job opportunities."

She emphasised the Authority's commitment to balancing economic development with the preservation of Guernsey's unique heritage, particularly its quarrying history, which contributes significantly to the island's visual and cultural identity.

The approval also signals a shift in perspective regarding development in the area.

"There has been a perception that it wasn't possible for development to take place in this area until a Local Planning Brief was prepared, but this application shows that this isn't the case," said Deputy Oliver.
