BMA supports "significant pay rises" for CI Doctors

Wednesday 25 April 2018

A deal secured by the BMA and LNC has seen all consultants and SAS doctors in Guernsey receive a 2.4 per cent pay increase.

Secured last week, the pay deal has been approved by the island’s medical staff committee and the specialty doctors and associate specialist groups.

The BMA said "Doctors in Guernsey and Jersey are set to benefit from deals securing significant pay rises, following BMA support" adding that it will include consultants and staff, associate specialist and specialty doctors who "have seen agreements to boost their pay in response to several years of stagnating and eroded pay rates."

In Jersey, 2017/18 pay for consultants will be increased by 3 per cent, rising to 3.5 per cent in 2018/19 and 5 per cent in 2019/20. SAS doctors working in Jersey will see their pay increased by 2 per cent, 3 per cent and 4 per cent, a cumulative 9 per cent increase, over the same period of time.

Meanwhile in Guernsey, a deal secured by the BMA and LNC has seen all consultants and SAS doctors receive a 2.4 per cent pay increase.

The BMA’s industrial relations officer for Guernsey and Jersey, Frank Minal, who played a leading part in the negotiations, said both deals represented a highly welcome outcome for doctors living and working on the islands. "At a time of general pay restraint, this is an amazing success for our members. In Jersey, these negotiations had been going on for around a year, and the BMA was instrumental in supporting the LNC there in putting forward their business case [for the uplift]."

Dr Peter Rabey, Guernsey's Medical Director responded as follows:

"Most doctors in Guernsey work either in Primary Care or for the MSG so are not affected by this pay increase.

"HSC has to compete globally to attract and retain good doctors. We are pleased that we continue to be in a position to do so. This is evidenced by fact that we currently only have 2 doctor vacancies (a pathologist and one doctor to recruit to our psychiatry team)."
