Guernsey Police is looking for people over the age of 18 to assist people who have difficulties when dealing with the Bailiwick's judicial processes.
In 2020, Law Enforcement dealt with 1,300 detained people, 18% of whom required the help of an Appropriate Adult due to their circumstances.
Appropriate Adult volunteers help protect the interests, rights, entitlements and welfare of vulnerable adults and children who are suspected of being involved in criminal offences, by ensuring they are treated "fairly, with dignity and respect".
Anyone who has knowledge or experience of dealing with people with learning disabilities or mental health concerns is asked to come forward and volunteer for the position with BLE.
Volunteers will gain an insight into criminal proceedings within the police station and courts, including being able to attend and observe police interviews and court hearings.
We're looking for people to become Appropriate Adults - this voluntary role ensures the interests, rights, entitlements & welfare of vulnerable people suspected of involvement in crime are safeguarded ensuring fair treatment with dignity & respect.

Applicants will be vetted to ensure they are suitable for the role, and while the scheme itself is voluntary, Appropriate Adults are either reimbursed for their travel costs, or assisted with travel where necessary.
