The loggerhead turtle rescued in Guernsey has finally begun her journey home, after a year-long delay.
After Barnacle Bill was rescued on the west coast in November last year following Storm Ciaran, the GSPCA was left caring for her for more than 13 months, as the charity struggled to find a suitable release location with proper import permits.
Challenges arose when trying to secure permits for Gran Canaria, Cape Verde, Turkey, Bermuda, and the Azores, but Barnacle Bill is finally being transported to Sea Life Brighton with Condor Ferries' free assistance.
Sea Life Brighton offers rehabilitation facilities, with the Royal Navy then aiming to transport Barnacle Bill, and other traveling turtles, to warmer waters.

Her time in Guernsey has done Barnacle Bill well. After she arrived at the GSPCA weighing just 700g she is now at a healthy weight of 3.8kgs - more than tripling in length over the year, to a mighty 18 inches.
“We are delighted to announce that she is now on route to Sea Life Brighton, thanks to Condor Ferries who are kindly providing free transport, and she travels with her main carer, the GSPCA’s Head of Marine Life Geoff George," said GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne.
“We will of course post updates, but a huge thanks to Sea Life Brighton and Condor Ferries, and everyone that has helped in her care and journey including the kind offer of the free flight we had.”
Ian Le Moigne from Condor Ferries said the ferry firm was happy to help.
"We transport many types of animals on our sailings each year so understand the importance of supporting organisations such as the GSPCA for the work they do in the Island.
"It is a privilege to assist Steve, Geoff and the dedicated team by helping carry this very special passenger."
