Back to the polls for Alderney

Monday 17 December 2018

Alderney's voters are heading back to the ballot box today, for a by-election and Plebiscite.

The by-election, which comes less than a month after the island's Ordinary election, is to choose a replacement for States Member Tony Barnes, to serve for the remaining two years of his term.

Mr Barnes recently announced his intention to resign from his post as States Member, having served as Deputy Chairman of Alderney's Policy and Finance Committee, Deputy Chairman of the General Services Committee and Chairman of the Finance Committee. He has also had responsibility as a board member and member of Alderney eGambling Ltd and the Alderney Liaison Group respectively. Other responsibilities have included his work on Transport and Traffic matters, waste disposal and police liaison.

Four people have been nominated for election to complete Mr Barnes' term of office and voters will get to choose their preferred candidate today between 09:30 and 18:30 at the Island Hall.

Alongside the by-election today is the Plebiscite, which will see voters in Alderney choose the island's two representatives to serve on the States of Guernsey.

The two Alderney States Members are full members of the States of Guernsey, voting on every item presented for approval or debate. Alongside 38 deputies elected in Guernsey they make up the 40 strong States of Deliberation, which among other issues agrees Alderney's budget each year.

Seven people have put themselves forward for the two roles, including the pair who currently hold the positions.

The polls will be open in the Plebiscite between 09:30 and 18:30 at the Island Hall today.
