Baby hats for Ukraine

Monday 26 September 2022

Knitters are asked to help out again, with a fresh appeal for baby hats which will sent to people in Ukraine displaced by the ongoing war.

The hugely successful appeal, which was launched earlier this year, has already seen forty humanitarian aid boxes, containing the 'Newborn Baby Hats Appeal boxes' with 6,500 items, be sent to groups working with people in the areas worst affected.

Lilita Kruze, the Latvian Ambassador for Guernsey, said the hats have been sent to:

● Poland for further distribution, to Latvia, specifically the Riga Maternity Hospital and charitable organization “Labdarības Lapa” set up specifically for Ukrainian war refugees; and

● Ukraine to Zhytomyr Regional Perinatal Centre, Kyiv Regional Perinatal Center and Maternity Hospital nr 2.

‌Ms Kruze is hoping that as Autumn approaches, more people may be able to knit some more baby hats.

She had paused the collection over the summer holidays but she said: "it’s now time to start again!"‌

Donation boxes will again be available at Guernsey's two Waitrose stores and at a number of churches:

● Waitrose - Admiral Park and Rohais

● Vale Parish Church

● St Saviour’s Parish Church

● Castel Church

● St Matthew’s Church

Ms Kruze said: "from all involved in the Newborn Baby Hats Appeal, sincere gratitude and thank you to Guernsey Post and DHL management and staff for their continued support."

She has asked if people donating a hat can include their name, as "it’s always nice to know who to say thank you to."

The donations can be knitted or crocheted baby hats, blankets, cardigans, mittens, socks, booties, comforters and toys.
