Approval given to convert popular bar to flats

Thursday 05 October 2023

Seven flats can be created in the former Townhouse nightclub building and other upper floors, with the ground level to be preserved for retail use.

A planning application for the protected building, 38 High Street, was submitted a year ago and has just been approved by planners to change the use and covert the floors into five one-bed flats and two bedsits.

It marks the end of around a decade of live music events being hosted on the first floor of the site, which closed its doors in 2019.

Significant internal works are required to the aged building.

The ground floor space is connected to the neighboring property, which used to house Burton Menswear, but a wall will be added to subdivide the units. A storage area on the first floor will also be retained for retail purposes.

Some of the flats will be accessible via a side alley, while others are inside an annex to the rear accessed via staircase at the back on the ground floor shop.

10 conditions have been attached to the plans by the DPA including additional details on the High Street facing windows and other recommendations to internal fixtures to maintain the “special interest” of the protected building.

Consent has not been given for the replacement of other windows, with agreement sought on the extent of repairs to these.

The application was submitted by Kirkwood Properties Ltd.
