The current bursary is in its second year, and was made possible thanks to a generous donation from a Société member. This bursary replaces the previous Griff Caldwell bursary, which was established in memory of Major Frank Griffiths ‘Griff’ Caldwell, a past president of La Société.

Past winners have studied subjects including Environment and Media, Natural Sciences, and Environmental Sciences. Last year’s winner, Charlotte Burgoine, is in her final year at Sparsholt University, studying for a BSc in Wildlife Ecology and Conservation. Charlotte’s dissertation research concerns the impacts of hedge-cutting on biodiversity here in Guernsey.

Pictured: One of La Société’s aims is to encourage the study and conservation of Guernsey’ nature. In line with this aim, this bursary is accessible to anyone not pursing higher education, but is researching aspects of Guernsey’s wildlife and ecology. The Guernsey Biological Records Centre can offer office space, advice, and support to on-island researchers.

“An aspect of this bursary that we are keen to promote is that it is open to people who are not university students, but who wish to study Guernsey’s biodiversity.
