"Ambitious" seafront plans could see fresh ideas for untapped resources

Monday 05 November 2018

Beer gardens, art galleries and boutique hotels could soon be popping up along the St Peter Port seafront if any of the initial ideas in the latest stage of plans for enhancing the seafront are adopted.

A public engagement to get together different proposals for La Vallette, the North Plantation and various areas in between, could see new ways of using German bunkers, and pier storage areas than previously considered.

Pictured: The States have set up a dedicated part of the gov.gg website with lots of information about the six sites.

The six sites in question as part of the 'Seafront Enhancement' plans are:

  • La Vallette Kiosk and surrounding amenities
  • La Vallette
  • Vivier Bunker and surrounding land
  • States' offices
  • North Plantation
  • Round Top Stores

While some of those areas are well known to all, others may be more of a mystery despite that fact that hundreds, possibly thousands of people will walk past them every day.

The Vivier bunker sits near the former slaughterhouse at the Fisherman's Quay, while the Round Top Stores is at the very end of the arm with all of the small car parking on the Victoria Pier (Crown Pier.)

As some of these areas, including the grass verge alongside the road at La Vallette, are not currently used for any visible purpose, ideas are now being collated to try and breathe some life into them.

Ideas so far include a boutique hotel in the current tourist information office, an al fresco dining area at the Round Top Stores, a shop, art gallery or beer garden at the Vivier bunker and a street performance are at the North Plantation.

There's not been any decisions made yet on what development, if any, will be made at any of the six sites. The States want more ideas first so they can look at all available options.

Deputy Gavin St Pier is on the steering group and said they want to get moving quickly.

"These need not be purely commercially led proposals, as schemes that lead to environmental and social enhancements will be assessed as equally important. The Steering Group has committed itself to ensuring that tangible progress should be made with these initial projects by October 2019, and this dual process of generating community-led ideas and seeking formal expressions of interest from would-be developers is key to that."
