Alderney runway 'patched up'

Friday 26 April 2024

Overnight work started this week to 'patch up' Alderney Airport's runway ahead of a long term solution being agreed to manage the essential infrastructure.

A spokesperson for the airport confirmed that the work is taking place after the last flights of the day, with the surfaces reinstated in time for normal opening each morning.

Aerodrome pavement specialists Amco Giffen are doing the work, which has been described as "essential maintenance and patch repairs to the runway and asphalt taxiway".

A spokesperson for the airport has dismissed rumours that this work led to the partial collapse of a section of the runway.

It's thought the message - which was shared with Express as well as politicians in both Alderney and Guernsey - was due to someone being "misinformed" about the work taking place.

Longer term, there has been recent movement in determining a solution to the ongoing problems with Alderney Airport's runway.

Guernsey Ports has confirmed it is "continuing to work on a long-term solution to the condition of the ageing facilities in Alderney".

Last year, a scheme to rebuild and extend the runway was put to tender, after the States of Guernsey had agreed financial backing for the work.

A “value engineering” phase is currently underway with the preferred bidder.

More information will be released when available.
