Alderney Air Races this weekend

Friday 21 September 2018

Alderney will be welcoming a number of private pilots for its annual air races this weekend, but access to the airport will be affected during the event due to road resurfacing.

The planned road resurfacing started yesterday with the first phase focusing on an area in the car park outside the Alderney Airport terminal building initially, meaning the car park is closed.

The roads nearby the Airport will also be worked on during this period.

Alderney Airport Duty Manager Paul Bunn said alternate routes will be signposted.

“Passengers and airport users should follow road signs, speed limits, and not park their vehicles in areas where the work is being carried out. This project is important for the island’s road network and we are asking users of Alderney Airport to bear with us whilst it is being carried out. We are confident the quality of the airport terminal car park and drop off areas will be an improvement for passengers and users as a result.”

At the same time the resurfacing is happening, the Alderney Air Races are making a return this weekend.

The main arrival day is Friday 21 with events over the whole weekend.

The organisers said to make the overall race more spectator friendly, modifications to the course have been made to ensure that all sections of the course have good vantage points.

"This is especially so with the move of the finish from the airport down to the harbour area. This year, for the first time, the finish line will go northward from the end of the breakwater, which, given the location, means that viewing sites such as the harbour area, or Fort Albert are bound to be popular.

"As soon as the revised course has been approved, we will do our best to ensure that copies of the course map are printed in both of the local news publications."

However, the organisers said the downside of these arrangements is that for the first time in the history of the event and "disappointingly to many, there will no longer be any public activities or presence at the airport."

There is a ‘command post’, at an as yet to be confirmed location, either in town, or at the harbour, where the organisers said they will be "only too pleased to welcome anyone who wishes to drop in and say 'hello'."
