Airport mix-up causes delays

Wednesday 03 July 2019

Six flights were delayed after staff took passengers from an Alderney flight to the wrong part of Guernsey Airport.

A low-level security alert was announced last night when passengers on the Alderney-Guernsey flight were taken into the departure lounge rather than being escorted into arrivals.

As a result 150 people had to be rescanned through security.

Colin Le Ray, General Manager at Guernsey Airport said:

“On the 2 July 2019 Guernsey Airport experienced a low-level security incident. As result, the airport departure lounge had to be vacated shortly after 17:30 local time.

"Whilst the incident is under investigation, it does appear passengers on an arriving Alderney flight were incorrectly handled and asked to wait in departures, rather than being escorted through into arrivals. This is not in accordance with protocol and led to the risk of a potential breach of security.

"Due to this incident, around 150 passengers were required to be re-screened at security.

"The re-screening of passengers and baggage was entirely necessary and ensured compliance with aviation security standards.

"Six flights were delayed; including the last departing London Gatwick flight, which left around 50 minutes late, this time, was largely recovered by close, with the last flights landing back in Guernsey by 21:10 local time."

The incident remains under investigation today.

Mr Le Ray said this incident was not related in any way to general security provision at the airport.
