Airport lane to be shut to motor vehicles due to air safety concerns

Thursday 07 March 2024

A traffic restriction will be trialed on a lane directly behind the westerly end of Guernsey’s runway after taller vehicles were found to be interfering with ground-based landing systems for approaching aircraft.

Guernsey Ports technician raised the alarm over air safety with Environment & Infrastructure which has agreed to stop vehicles over two-and-a-half metres tall from using Ruette de la Tourelle in St Pierre du Bois.

Global aviation regulations have acknowledged taller vehicles are interfering with instrument landing systems elsewhere.

But as there are no pavements or properties on the road the Committee is restricting all motorised vehicles from using it, with bollards and signs to be placed at either end from 9 March.

The restriction will be in place for at least a year, with feedback being invited from 11 March. It will then be decided whether to close the road for good.

E&I say the restrictions is timed to coincide with the end of roadworks at Le Bourg which has caused a major diversion around the airfield.

Vice-President Deputy Adrian Gabriel said: “By instead restricting access to those on foot, bike or horse, we can create something similar to a Ruette Tranquille without significantly impacting the journeys of people using cars, vans and HGVs, as there is a better main road alternative very nearby."

Matthew Capazario, Head of Airside Operations, added: “It’s essential to safeguard instrument landing systems from any interference, as their signals are relied upon by aircraft landing into Guernsey. As such there are protected areas around ILS equipment and recent changes to international aviation regulations require these protected areas to be increased.

“We welcome the Committee’s decision, which will help us to safeguard our ILS equipment and maintain compliance with advances in international regulations.”
