Aen Gruffalo arrive au YouTube

The Guernsey French version of the popular children's book The Gruffalo has made it to Youtube, with a little help from the front man of Buffalo Huddleston.

It was originally translated from English to Guernesiais by Yan Marquis earlier this year, and now he has put his voice to an audio version, accompanied by the familiar images from the Julia Donaldson book, illustrated by Axel Scheffler.

While Mr Marquis voices the main character, which is a mouse, the other characters including a snake, an owl, and a fox, are voiced by Jull-Z.

He is the singer and rapper with the eclectic band Buffalo Huddleston.

Just like the original children’s book, the Guernesiais version tells the story of the mouse wandering through the woods and encountering animals, real and fantastical.

It is available to buy from a number of local shops including the Lexicon, and the Guernsey Museum shop at Candie Gardens.

Now, it has been made into an audio version, with the accompanying illustrations and posted on YouTube.

The Guernesiais version of The Gruffalo has been published by Island Language LBG with the support of Guernsey Museums. Director Chris Dye, said at the time of publication that he was hopeful it will help encourage some young learners to pick up some Guernsey French.

“This beloved children’s story is a great way for children and adults who have had little exposure to the Guernesiais language to see how fun and lyrical it is,” said Mr Dye. “Guernesiais is a great language for poetry and storytelling for all ages. We hope this inspires people to learn and use the island’s native language in their own creative ways.”

Island Language LBG is also fundraising to create an online dictionary and learning app for Guernesiais. Anyone may donate to the project online at gofundme.com/GuernseyLanguageApp
