First Cadet open day tomorrow

Saturday 09 March 2019

The Guernsey Army Cadet Force is holding a series of open days over the coming weeks where it wants to show any young people who are looking for fun, adventure and friendship, what life is like as a cadet.

Future cadets can look forward to activities that include shooting, weapons handling, fieldcraft, blank firing exercises, navigation, first aid, drill, community projects and physical training.

During the spring and summer months cadets can expect to take part in surfing, kayaking and paddle boarding with our qualified instructors. They'll also have the chance as Guernsey cadets to travel off-island to the UK to attend cadet camps, as well as taking part in military based exercises locally.

Among the skills that Cadets pick up are tools for self-reliance, leadership and discipline, and they also say they have a lot of fun.

The first open morning is being held tomorrow, Sunday 10 March, between 10:30 and noon at Rifles House, New Road, St Sampsons. A further open morning will take place at Le Guet between 10:30 and noon on Sunday 17 March.

During these open days, visitors can watch current cadets undertaking training exercises such as basha building, cooking in the field, first aid and rifle drills, and prospective cadets will also have the opportunity to try out some of the activities on offer.

The ACF would also be keen to welcome any new adult instructors who could give up their time, learn new skills and give something back to the young people in the Island, and Guernsey ACF is looking to recruit young people to join its detachment, aged between 12 (and in year 8) and 18. Those who sign up will receive on loan a uniform and fieldcraft kit, as well as training mirroring that delivered by the Army, adapted to suit cadets.
