3,000 signed up to EU settlement scheme

The States is reminding those eligible to remain in Guernsey post-Brexit to sign up to the EU settlement scheme before it is too late.

The scheme has been in place since April 2019 and EU nationals who wish to remain in the Bailiwick beyond the end of the transition period have to register with it in order to do so.

To date, Policy & Resources Committee Member Jonathan Le Tocq said that 3,000 people had applied to secure their rights to work here, as well as access to healthcare and public services. 

"There has been a recent push to promote the EU settlement scheme for all eligible EU, EEA and Swiss nationals and their families," he said. "The States recognised early the need to protect the rights of those nationals who form an important part of the island community."

The scheme is free of charge and will remain open until the end of June next year.

"This will provide time for all those nationals who are currently resident in the Bailiwick, or who will be by the end of 2020, to register so that their rights to healthcare, work arrangements, access to benefits and public services remain unchanged," said Deputy Le Tocq.

"Any EU, EEA or Swiss nationals resident in the Bailiwick who are not yet part of the settled status scheme should not delay in registering."
