300 trees to be planted at Le Guet

Tuesday 15 February 2022

100 trees will be planted at Le Guet this month as part of a three-year Guernsey Trees for Life project which will see a total of 300 planted in the area.

Most of the current trees at Le Guet, which were planted around 90 years ago, are coming to the end of their natural life cycle, but will not be removed.

The first phase of a Guernsey Trees for Life initiative will see 25 each of Scots Pine, Maritime Pine, Silver Birch and English Oak trees planted.

The trees, donated by Jumpman Gaming, will be planted by Guernsey Trees for Life and Jumpman volunteers and pupils of La Mare de Carteret in partnership with La Societe Guernesiaise.

Guernsey Trees for Life Acting Secretary Andy McCutcheon said it was important to ensure the future of Guernsey’s green spaces.

“Climate change and nature loss is at the top of many agendas globally," he said.

"Guernsey has a relatively limited number of accessible green spaces open for public enjoyment. It is important that our current spaces are protected and enhanced for future generations."

The project will improve the level of biodiversity locally and help educate islanders about the importance of sustaining Guernsey’s natural environment.

Jumpman Gaming Managing Director Kris Kukula encouraged other to support the initiative.

“Making the Bailiwick a greener place to live isn’t an easy task, so I encourage other businesses to consider how they can give back and support this fantastic community effort,” he said.
