Hundreds of businesses register with the ODPA

Monday 11 January 2021

The Office of the Data Protection Authority has seen hundreds of local businesses register with it during the first week of 2021.

Recently registered groups include businesses, sole traders and charitable organisations.

It’s imperative that businesses and sole traders register with the ODPA this year, as it is now a legal requirement.

“Registration is the first step for any organisation or entitiy handling personal data,” said the Bailiwick’s Data Protection Commissioner, Emma Martins.

"It enables the ODPA to oversee an effective regulatory regime, independent of the States of Guernsey. This independence is essential for two reasons.

"Firstly, it ensures the Bailiwick is well-placed to take advantage of the digital era’s economic benefits by safeguarding the flow of data between us and other jurisdictions that is essential for trade. And secondly it promotes the protection of all islanders’ rights over their personal data – any information about them.

At the time of writing, the ODPA had received direct registrations from:

  • over 290 small businesses (<49 staff)

  • large businesses (50 or more staff)

  • over 90 charities/not-for-profits

Any business, organisation, charity or sole trader that processes personal information must register with the ODPA by the end of February.
