Jersey celebrates a new Michelin star restaurant as Ormer, by renowned chef Shaun Rankin, gains its first Michelin accreditation.

The St Helier restaurant gains the tremendous accolade only four months after opening its doors for the first time. Ormer opened to great fanfare in May 2013 and has been receiving critical acclaim since; most recently gaining an early entry into the Good Food Guide 2014.

The restaurant is owned by celebrity chef Shaun Rankin who has now become the first chef in Jersey to achieve a Michelin star for two consecutive Jersey restaurants.

Earning a star is seen as one of the highest honours in the industry. Michelin Inspectors analyse restaurants throughout the year, their anonymity is fundamental to the inspection process that has been refined over more than 100 years. Evaluations involve repeated test meals to assess quality and reliability of the experience. The star symbolises quality of products, the mastering of flavors, mastering of cooking, personality of the cuisine, value for money and the consistency of what the restaurant offers to its customers.

The full Ormer Michelin review cites:

‘Named after a rare shellfish found in local waters and resembling a French bistro, with distressed blue woodwork, shuttered windows and a pavement terrace. The elegant interior is intimate yet buzzy. Cooking is unfussy, refined and assured, and uses only the very best seasonal island produce. Specialities include Lobster ravioli with scallops, ginger, crab and tomato bisque. Lamb shoulder, goat‘s cheese and honeycomb. Rhubarb soufflé with mascarpone ice cream.’

Shaun Rankin, Chef Proprietor, Ormer, says:

‘For us to open in May and get a Michelin star four months later is an incredible achievement and a testament to the determination of the team and partners in this venture to make this a success. The Michelin Inspectors noted our dedication to seasonal island produce and an unfussy approach to quality dining which is paramount to us. This again consolidates our excellent relationship with Michelin, which has been built over nine years. I am proud to have their confidence in our ability to consistently deliver a high standard. We are thrilled with this result and hope it again highlights Jersey’s strength as a culinary destination.’
