A group of budding footballers from St Brelade FC is set to receive some training tips from a Premier League legend this weekend.

Ex-Wales international and Liverpool FC legend Ian Rush, MBE, is the official race ambassador for this year’s Standard Chartered Jersey Marathon. To kick off his trip to Jersey, he will be attending a special ‘football clinic’ with the under 11 squad at St Brelade FC on Saturday 1st October.

As well as joining in the training session and offering insight into the techniques that made him one of Liverpool’s all time greats, he will also be hosting a special ‘meet the Legend’ autograph session for fans to attend after the clinic.

Ian Rush, Liverpool FC Ambassador, said: “I am delighted to teach these young players a little bit about ‘The Liverpool Way’. It is so important to encourage health and this is a great initiative Standard Chartered is supporting.

“I look forward to meeting as many fans as possible whilst in Jersey and wish all the participants in Sunday’s marathon luck and hope that I can provide a bit of extra encouragement.”

Gary McDonald, St Brelade FC first team manager, commented, ‘This is a marvellous opportunity for St Brelade’s young players to learn and pick up tips from one of the legends of the game. Ian Rush has won many major honours and was an international, so to be on the same pitch as him and be coached by him is a dream for these young footballers.’

Mr Rush, who played for Liverpool FC from 1980 to 1987 and again from 1988 to 1996, is the Club’s all-time leading goalscorer with 346 goals in all competitions during his two spells with the Reds. At international level, he made 73 appearances for the Wales national team and remains the record goalscorer for his country, with 28 goals between 1980 and 1996.

Fans are invited to watch the ‘football clinic’ from 3pm on Saturday 1st October and the ‘meet the Legend’ session will take place from 4 – 4.30pm in the clubhouse. Fans will also be able to meet Ian on Sunday 2 October at the Standard Chartered Jersey Marathon, where he will be available from 10:15am – 11:00am in the Marathon Village Marquee.
