Baker & Partners is seeking a candidate to begin a 12-month pupillage in 2017 further to being granted ongoing Approved Training Organisation (ATO) status by the Bar Standards Board.

The firm is inviting one prospective law professional with a relevant first or upper second-class honours degree to undertake practical training in Jersey. The first six months of the pupillage will involve working under the supervision of qualified Pupil Supervisors in the firm to complete objectives and learn skills in the firm’s specialist practice areas, which include fraud, asset tracing and recovery, trust disputes, civil and commercial litigation, and regulation. The second six months will be spent with Chambers in London as an international pupil.

A pupillage is the final professional requirement to qualify as a barrister. On completion, the individual will be eligible to apply for a full practising certificate. Baker & Partners may also offer a successful pupil a career opportunity in the future.

Baker & Partners’ was the first firm outside of England and Wales to be granted ATO status in 2015. To achieve its ATO status, the firm had to meet a stringent set of criteria. This included the Bar Standards Board’s review and approval of a pupillage policy, and a comprehensive checklist of what the individual would learn and achieve throughout the pupillage.

Stephen Baker, commented:

“Following the success of our 2015 programme, our ongoing ATO approval allows us to continue to offer a unique learning experience to potential candidates as the only Channel Islands firm to offer this type of training. The nature of our business means that having our practitioners qualified both in the UK and Jersey enables our clients to be serviced by some of the brightest minds. As most of our practitioners are dual qualified, our pupils can benefit from learning the spectrum of Jersey law while having the opportunity to absorb the wider knowledge of our experts. If you have the relevant qualifications and experience, and an interest in expanding your law expertise to our offshore jurisdiction, I encourage you to apply. Baker & Partners really is a great environment and fertile ground to learn the intricacies of Jersey law.”
