The Complex Health Needs Service was launched in September 2020. The aim of the service is to provide emotional and practical support to children and young people aged 8-17 who have a health need such as diabetes, Crohn’s or leukaemia. The service provides support in one-to-one and group settings as well as providing family and young people events throughout the year.

This year the service ran a two-day fun event on the 28th and 29th July for young people who access the service for support. Ten young people attended the event. The aim was to bring young people together who all experience a health condition where some of these young people are the only ones on the island with their condition. This event gave them a safe space and a peer network with other young people who are going through similar experiences. These two days were packed with great opportunities and fun which they thoroughly deserved.

There were many activities run over these two days by local providers. We would like to thank Climb LBG, Iris and Dora, Crabby Jacks, The Guernsey Sailing Trust and Island Rib Voyages for making this event so special. These activities really made some memories for life for these young people and allowed them to have new experiences and make new friendships.

Alisha Crocker who runs the Complex Health Needs Service said ‘All these young people are true superstars. It has been a pleasure to watch these young people build confidence and make new friendships throughout this event. Watching them have fun and have huge smiles on their faces is exactly what this event is all about, they deserve it.’

There was also some lovely feedback from one of the child’s parents who said ‘I can’t express my gratitude enough. Not only were the activities amazing but those who accompanied our children, and their respective physical needs were absolutely incredible. It can’t have been easy, but they did it and they gave these kids a truly wonderful two days. Thank you from the bottom of my heart’.

The young people were full of joy and seemed to thoroughly enjoy the event. This cannot be more clearly represented than in the words of one young person on the rib ride ‘THIS IS EPIC!!!’.

The Complex Health Needs Service continues to grow and will be organising more events of fun for the future.
