Nearly 200 youngsters will represent the island at this year’s Dance World Cup.

Following the qualifiers in March, 197 dancers were chosen to go through to the annual event which takes place in a different location each year. From 25th June to 2nd July, thousands of dancers from 42 countries will compete in Jersey and the team from Guernsey which will be accompanied by13 teachers and helpers, will be instantly recognisable as each one will be wearing a team hoodie following a £5,000 donation from Ravenscroft.

Vanessa Mahy, who is involved with the fundraising said: "There are six dance and theatre schools from Guernsey taking place and we took the decision that we would all come together and represent the island as a whole. Going to the qualifiers and then to the main event will be very expensive and so we’re doing lots of fundraising before we leave.

‘It’s amazing that Ravenscroft has come forward and offered to pay for the hoodies which will make everyone feel much more like a team. Taking part in the Dance World Cup is something the dancers will remember for the rest of their lives and I know they will wear their hoodies with pride."

The schools from Guernsey taking part in the Dance World Cup, which features ballet, modern, tap, song and dance and street/hip hop, are B Creative Dance, Guernsey Academy of Theatrical Education, Karen Dempsey School of Dance, Music Box Dance, The Academy of Dance and Theatre Arts and The Avril Earl Dance and Theatre Arts Centre.

Ravenscroft’s CEO, Channel Islands Charlie Roger said: "The dancers have all worked incredibly hard to make it through the qualifiers and have the opportunity to compete alongside dancers from across the world.

"They will be flying the flag for Guernsey and when Ravenscroft heard how all the schools were working together to fundraise, we were more than happy to step in and cover the cost of more than 200 hoodies so that they can use the money they raise to subsidise travel, accommodation, entry fees and costumes. We wish each dancer every success."

The team has also organised a quiz and done bag packing at supermarkets to raise money. Donations have also been received from Trust Corporation and Rihoy and Son who have given £500 and InterTrust who have donated £300.
