This year’s Skipton Swimarathon is set to be a bumper one, organisers from the Guernsey Lions and Round Table are predicting.

The highly popular fundraiser is now in its 46th year and promises to be one of the best yet.

It pitches teams of family, friends and work colleagues in a fun, hour-long swim at Beau Sejour, often in fancy dress, to raise money for charity. This year’s focus is on mental health awareness, with both Guernsey Mind and the Youth Commission of Guernsey & Alderney sharing the proceeds raised.

No-one needs to be a super swimmer – it’s all about the fun – and swimmers can book a lane that suits them anytime between 4th and 8th October by visiting www.swimarathon.org

One team participating in the Skipton Swimarathon for the first time is made up of staff working at the Financial and Economic Crime Bureau, based at Ozanne Hall on Mignot Plateau.

Team captain, Heidi Sheppard, said:

“Our team is happy to take part in this Guernsey institution for the very first time. We were enticed to take to the water by the two mental health charities who will be benefitting from the funds raised. Both Guernsey Mind and the Youth Commission for Guernsey & Alderney do an amazing job within the community, and if we can help by having a fun time in the pool, then why not? I can’t say we are the best swimmers, but it’s more about the fun than anything, and we’re all really looking forward to taking the plunge.”

The final word must go to Deputy Andy Cameron:

“We are excitedly approaching the 3rd year of this term with a fantastic team of deputies eagerly gearing up for the Skipton Swimarathon! Our dynamic group boasts a diverse age range, spanning from energetic 30-somethings to seasoned individuals in their 70s. Despite our mixed abilities, we have always embraced the spirit of camaraderie and support.

“Last year's Swimarathon was filled with unforgettable moments, one of which involved our humorous endeavour of pushing Deputy John Gollop up and down the lane in an inflatable ring for his lengths!

“I cannot recommend participating in the Swimarathon enough. Not only is it an incredibly enjoyable fundraiser, but it also fosters a fantastic atmosphere of banter and friendly competition between the participating teams. It's an opportunity to come together as a community, all while supporting worthy causes.

“Our efforts last year did not go unnoticed, as we proudly received the bronze award for fund-raising for Grow. This year, as we set our sights on supporting Guernsey Mind and the Youth Commission, we hope to surpass our previous fund raising and make an even greater impact.

“Join us at this year’s Swimarathon, where every stroke and every splash contribute to making a positive difference in our community. Together, let's aim high, exceed our goals, and spread the message of compassion and support for those who need it most."
