Sure has activated a number of its 4G network sites in Guernsey and across the Bailiwick islands following the mobile operator’s new network licence being issued by the regulator, CICRA.

Sure envisages that the 4G network will be live on all sites across Guernsey and the Bailiwick islands in the first week of April.

Sure is the first operator in Guernsey to be awarded the licence by CICRA following the completion of a statutory consultation process. This licence allows Sure to be the first to commercially launch and operate their 4G network in the island.

Engineers have been working to install the new equipment over the past few months and have been testing a number of the 4G sites during March. Once the new network is live, engineers will continue to optimise and test it over the next few weeks to ensure the network is working to its full capabilities.

Sure’s 4G network will enable customers to experience much faster data download speeds, improving access to video streaming, maps and social media.
The network upgrade represents a £10 million investment from Sure in infrastructure that will improve the current 3G and 2G mobile networks as well as introduce 4G to the island.

The Sure Guernsey website and social media channels will be updated daily with the latest upgrade news during the final stage of the roll out to ensure customers are kept fully up-to-date on the progress.

Customers with 4G ready handsets can find step by step guides on how to set up their phones ready to use the new network on the Sure website.

Eddie Saints, chief executive at Sure, said: “Switching on the first 4G sites is a major milestone in this process and we’re looking forward to having our brand new 4G network completely live across the whole of the Bailiwick at the beginning of April.

“Every effort is being made to minimise the disruption to customers during this final stage but a project of this scale and complexity will unfortunately result in some disruption so we thank our customers in advance for their patience.

“The upgrade work will improve our existing 2G and 3G mobile services as well as introducing the 4G network so all of our mobile customers will benefit from the investment. We’re excited to be the first Guernsey provider to bring this latest technology to our customers.”
