Marc Winn of the Dandelion Project challenged the audience to fulfil their potential and make a difference in society at last week’s Institute of Directors (IoD) monthly lunch, sponsored by Heritage Insurance.
Mr Winn implored IoD members to get involved in directly improving the community and suggested a range of ideas which could position Guernsey at the forefront of the international trend towards exponential growth.
Guernsey’s greenhouses were one area where Mr Winn and his colleagues at the Dandelion Project have set their sights.
“Guernsey has an abundance of disused and vacant greenhouses,” said Mr Winn. “We can still be using all of that space to become more self-reliant. Vertical farming is happening now and is something we can be looking at as a means of bringing home our food production.”
The Dandelion Project is the island’s first exponential organisation and its aim is to make Guernsey the best place to live in the world by 2020. The project believes in the power of the individual to bring about greater change.
“The project aims to alter the trajectory of humanity. Every time someone shifts trajectory it creates a ripple and causes others to shift trajectory as well,” said Mr Winn
The theme of infrastructure has guided all of the IoD lunches in 2014 and Mr Winn approached the topic through an exploration of how infrastructures will have to adapt in the future. He cited drones, biotechnology and the XPRIZE as examples of existing worldwide infrastructure shifts and emphasised the need for local initiatives to follow these trends.
The next IoD lunch sponsored by Heritage Insurance will be held on Friday 17 October and will feature a talk from His Excellency the Lieutenant-Governor entitled: "Infrastructure – Maintaining the Present and Securing the Future."
