On Saturday 25 January around 30 Les Beaucamps High School students attended an all day training session to prepare them for their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expedition.
The day comprised of training in Trangia cooking, navigational skills, first aid and tent and rucksack packing.
It was a fun-filled practical day where the participants learnt all the skills they need to complete their practice and qualifying expeditions in Guernsey later this year.
The expeditions will be undertaken in teams of up to 6 people, they will be independent and self-sufficient during this time. They will follow a preplanned route and will be remotely supervised by a qualified supervisor and assessor provided by the Youth Commission for Guernsey and Alderney.
It is a really exciting opportunity for these young people, they will learn new skills which will see them through life including teamwork, negotiation skills, compromise and tenacity.
The expedition is not the only part of the award the participants need to complete they also need to work independently in their own time towards a volunteering, skill and physical section helping them to be ambitious and reach their full potential.
This event was run by members of staff from the Youth Commission and supported by Duke of Edinburgh’s Award volunteers.
