Le Murier 21st Everest Challenge

The 21st Le Murier Everest Challenge gets underway soon.

The yearly event, sponsored again by Healthspan, will take place at Le Murier School on 6^th, 7^th & 8^th  March.  Teams are invited to complete a minimum of 15 ascents of the school’s climbing wall in one hour. The intention is that the combined teams’ climbs will total the height of Everest, 8,848metres, by the end of the three days. Entry is free, but each team raises money through sponsorship.

Gary Dovey, teacher at Le Murier and organiser of the event, said “I can’t believe it’s the 21^st Everest Challenge. It’s amazing to think over the years we have seen in excess of 20,000 climbers raising over £350,000. Once again we are looking for teams of 6-8 people to raise plenty of sponsorship and climb for one hour. Anyone can climb, from toddlers to grandparents. If you don’t have a team, just come along we’ll find somewhere for you to climb. We also have different levels of climbing to suit different levels of ability and we can accommodate wheelchair users.”

All climbing equipment will be provided by the school and instruction will be given by qualified staff. For those wondering if they can do it, come along to the practice session between 10.00am and 4.00pm on Saturday 1^st March, no advanced booking required, just turn up there will be staff on hand to help find a suitable climb.

The aim of the event is to raise sufficient funds for each young person attending Le Murier to take part in as many residential visits per year as possible. These residentials  give the students opportunities to learn and practice vital life skills necessary for them to become as independent as possible.

The funds raised for residential visits give youngsters an opportunity to experience a range of activities that develop skills and confidence, which many of us take for granted.”

Gary added “It is fantastic that Healthspan have agreed to sponsor the 21^st Everest Challenge. This will mean that all the money raised through sponsorship over the weekend will go directly into funding the residential trips for the students. This enables them to visit places such as Lihou, Herm, Jersey, Wales and France, and allows them to engage in a whole range of activities, such as local overnight residentials in school, camps at Rue Mainguy, and for the older students, completing their Duke of Edinburgh Expedition.

The aim of these experiences is to develop life skills and confidence. Without this fundraising none of this would be possible.”
