Two exceptional pieces of art have gone on show at Guernsey Museum.
The Rona Cole gallery has been adapted to hold loaned artworks by two of the most recognised contemporary artists of our time, Damien Hirst and Yayoi Kusama.
Hirst burst onto the British art scene in the late Eighties after curating Freeze while still a student at Goldsmiths College. The exhibition showcased work by Hirst and fellow students, many of which went on to be known as the YBAs (Young British Artists).
The artwork by Hirst is composed of butterflies and is from his Kaleidoscope painting series. Hirst often examines the notion of life and death and butterflies offer a wonderfully aesthetic means of illustrating this life cycle.
The other artist, Yayoi Kusama was born in Matsumoto City, Japan. She moved to New York in 1958, quickly establishing her position on the New York the avant-garde scene, together with artists such as Andy Warhol and Eva Hesse.
The Kusama work on loan is a painting on canvas, although she is known for working in in a variety of media including sculpture, film, and installation. She often uses repetitive, densely patterned motifs which comes from an awareness of the limitless nature of the universe
“We are very grateful to the lender as many significant artworks from private collections are hidden away from the public gaze so it is fantastic that these two important works are accessible to Museum visitors for the whole of 2018”, said Jason Monaghan, Head of Heritage Services.
The artworks will be on show at Candie for the whole of 2018. Normal admission rates apply, but Discovery Pass holders and accompanying Children are admitted free.
