A charity quiz hosted last week in Herm raised over £5,000 for the Flying Christine III marine ambulance, a vital emergency service that serves the Bailiwick of Guernsey islands.

The funds will support much-needed repairs and updates for the 30-year-old ambulance, which continues to provide life-saving medical transport to island communities.

The sell-out event was a great success, with 225 enthusiastic quizzers filling the Mermaid Tavern courtyard. 33 teams from Guernsey and Herm, including four teams from the Princess Elizabeth Hospital and the Flying Christine crew, competed for the top spot. The quiz was expertly hosted by Quizmaster, Jim Delbridge, adding excitement, energy and a friendly rivalry to the evening.

The winning team, Les Quizerables, were presented with a specially created trophy and a £500 cash prize. In addition to the quiz, the night ended with a lively round of “rocking bingo,” hosted by Janice Meakin, adding even more fun to the event.

Tom Jones, Herm’s head of hospitality, thanked all involved, including everyone who took part: “It was a hugely enjoyable evening, enjoyed by all that attended, with a real community spirit. This is something we plan to repeat as a biannual fundraising effort going forward. The event raised £5,017, with all ticket profits going directly to the charity.”

The Flying Christine marine ambulance has been in service for 30 years, providing essential emergency care and transport to residents and visitors in the Bailiwick.

Mark Mapp, CEO of the Ambulance and Rescue Service, thanked Herm’s management and the participants: “I was genuinely overwhelmed by the incredible level of support from the community. It was a truly heart-warming experience to see so many people coming together for such an important cause. The volunteer ambulance crew who attended had a fantastic evening, leaving with a great sense of pride in their work and feeling genuinely supported by everyone involved.”

He added, “Events like these not only raise much-needed funds but also remind us of Flying Christine’s vital role in the islands. It makes all the difference when the community shows such tremendous support.”

The event was supported by main sponsors and supporters, including Herm Island Ltd, Carlsberg UK, Manor Farm Foods, and Herm Travel Trident. Their contributions helped ensure the evening’s success and the future support of the Flying Christine ambulance service.

The next Great Mermaid Courtyard Charity Quiz will take place on May 1, 2025, with tickets set to be released soon on the Herm website.
