NON-executive directors need to invest in their own development to be effective and add value to the boards on which they sit.

To support existing and aspiring non-executive directors in the island, the GTA University Centre is organising a one day course which will focus on the role and its responsibilities. It will be led by Terry Waymouth, an independent business coach and mentor and a lead consultant for the Institute of Directors who specialises in board effectiveness, strategy and finance.

‘People can naively assume that just because they have been a director of a successful business that they will naturally be a good non-executive director but there are some very important differences in what their role is and the responsibilities they have,’ said deputy chief executive of the GTA University Centre Simon Le Tocq.

‘Guernsey is very fortunate to have a wealth of experienced and senior business leaders who can bring enormous knowledge to a company but they need to understand how they can be effective in their role as a non-executive director. This one day course will provide invaluable insight for existing and aspiring NEDs.’

Mr Waymouth, who is already well-known in the island, has over 20 years’ experience at director level in large corporates, SMEs and charities. The course will look at the duties of a director, the board’s composition and role, the tasks it undertakes and how non-executive directors can add value in different situations. It will also examine the qualities and experience needed by non-executive directors and the way in which they are appointed, from both the company and applicant’s perspective.

The course takes place on 8th October 2014 and costs £275 with a 10% discount for IoD, CGI and Guernsey NED Forum members. Anyone wanting more information can contact Liesel Lindsay, liesel.lindsay@gta.gg or telephone 746884.
