The patron of Guernsey Community Savings, Sir Richard McMahon, has officially opened the financial inclusion charity’s new office in Mansell Street, St Peter Port.
Welcoming Sir Richard to the office, GCS chair Peter Neville said: ‘Our move to this new office, which is modest but very conveniently situated, marks three years of Guernsey Community Savings working to reduce financial exclusion in Guernsey.
‘I’m very grateful to our team for all the work they did to make the move a success.
‘I’m also grateful to everyone who supports us, whether financially or with practical support. On this occasion, our particular thanks go to the Social Investment Fund which is providing the funds to cover our rent as well as funds towards staff costs.
The Bailiff, Sir Richard McMahon, replied, ‘Small beginnings lead to great things. At the start Guernsey Community Savings was just an idea and there wasn’t an office, or a team, despite the need which exists. It is great to see what has been achieved over the past three years and long may that success continue.
‘It’s so important in moving to these premises that people feel comfortable coming here, that they feel they can take that step through the door and see welcoming faces as we see today.’
Since it was set up in September 2020, GCS has helped more than 120 islanders who had previously been financially excluded from society because they didn’t have a bank account. The charity ensures that each of its clients has access to an easy-to-use online account, a debit card, and a means of building up savings.
The charity also offers financial management education to those who need it, including running six-week programmes with the education department at Guernsey Prison.
The new office is at Unit 1, 20 Mansell Street. Visits by appointment.
