A NEW fundraiser which saw hundreds of islanders swimming in bays around Guernsey has raised more than £30,000 for the Les Bourgs Hospice.

The 30 bays in 30 days idea was the brainchild of Liz Stonebridge who wanted to raise money for Les Bourgs Hospice after they cared for her mother and more recently a close family member. The idea captured the imagination of hundreds of people who got involved in the challenge to swim in 30 different bays in whichever order and whenever worked for them between 1st and 30th July.

‘Liz’s idea was a fantastic one but we were overwhelmed by just how popular the event was. We could never have imagined that so many people, of all ages, would have wanted to do it. Not only did it raise more than £30,000, it also raised the profile of Les Bourgs Hospice to a wide cross-section of islanders,’ said Les Bourgs Hospice fundraising administrator Trish De Carteret.

‘We are indebted to Liz, her team of helpers and all the companies and individuals who gave their time or helped with the donation of their skills and expertise or physical items. They all contributed to the enormous success of 30 bays in 30 days which will now become an annual event.’

Mrs De Carteret added that they also wanted to thank the swimmers and their sponsors for giving up their time.

‘The feedback has been fantastic and people seemed to really enjoy the opportunity to swim in bays that they normally wouldn’t go to, she said.

Les Bourgs Hospice is now planning a 30 runs in 30 days event during October where participants will run for 30 minutes every day during October and be sponsored for their efforts.

More information will be announced next month.
