Waitrose & Partners has exclusively launched a reusable tampon applicator, made by innovative British personal care brand DAME, with the items going on sale at both Guernsey branches.
The reusable applicator, named ‘D’, gives tampon users a more environmentally friendly choice away from single use applicators made from plastic or non-recyclable materials.
The applicator is made from medical grade Mediprene® with active antimicrobial technology to keep it hygienic. It works with all brands and absorbencies of tampon and is designed to last for years. After use, it can be rinsed and dried and put back into its pouch to be used again.
Paula Protheroe, branch manager at Waitrose & Partners Admiral Park, said: “Tampons aren't usually top on our list of conversations, but as more shoppers become concerned about their impact on the environment we are giving our customers the choice to not use single use tampon applicators and reduce the amount of plastic waste.”
DAME founders, Celia Pool and Alec Mills, started developing the applicator two years ago. Together they launched a campaign for their applicator on Kickstarter.com, a crowdfunding platform. They trended globally on Twitter and hit their target in just four days, receiving international attention.
Celia Pool said: “So far, women have been forced to choose between applicators or the environment, despite half of them being concerned about the impact their menstrual products have on the planet. We want to change that with our reusable tampon applicator. Each time a woman switches to using this new product, she could save up to 12,000 pieces of single-use plastic from entering our oceans."
